La Calera

In late July of 2025, the Guanajuato Prosecutor’s Office discovered a mass grave in the yard of an “abandoned property” in La Calera, Irapuato, while conducting a court-authorized investigation. La Calera residents began to suspect a gravesite days before due to a strong smell. Specialized forensic criminology, archeology, and anthropology teams were sent to unearth and analyze the remains. Within the week, about half of the bodies had been identified, with the remaining ones being difficult due to dismemberment and varying states of decomposition. The state prosecutor’s report states that the remains were in a "fragmented and complex" condition. The excavation in La Calera was carried out four days in a row using heavy machinery. About two months prior to the discovery of the site, a mass shooting at a bar during a party that killed 12; however, there is no official forensic connection between those victims and the ones found at La Calera.
