The Al Abrar Mosque in Gaza City was struck repeatedly during the early weeks of the 2023–2024 bombardment campaign. Eyewitnesses reported large numbers of civilians sheltering inside, as mosques served as de facto community refuges amid ongoing strikes. Fatalities numbered in the dozens, with many injured drawn from nearby residential blocks as well as those inside the mosque. The attack reflects a wider IDF pattern of targeting civilian congregation sites in northern Gaza, raising grave concerns under IHL.
Satellite imagery shows rubble at the mosque site following November strikes. Survivor testimonies document collapsed structures, difficulty retrieving bodies, and improvised burials nearby.
